Batumi entrances: hidden architecture of the old city

Batumi Entrance Halls

Batumi is not only a resort city with seascapes and modern skyscrapers but also a real open-air museum. Here, every house, staircase, and stained-glass window tells its own story. Some of the most atmospheric elements of the city's architecture are the ancient entrance halls. For a long time, Batumi entrance halls remained outside the attention of guidebooks. These unique spaces connect the past and the present, revealing secrets of Batumi that go unnoticed by most tourists.

Batumi entrance halls are architectural gems of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this time, the city developed actively due to oil production and became a major trading port. Wealthy merchants and entrepreneurs built tenement houses in the Art Nouveau, Eclectic, and Art Deco styles, filling their interiors with exquisite details:

Carved wooden and metal railings decorated with intricate patterns; stained-glass windows that refract sunlight and create a fairytale atmosphere; decorative frescoes on the ceilings inspired by European art; and mosaic floors that have preserved their beauty after a century.

Each entrance hall is a small world where Georgian and European architectural traditions intertwine.

Addresses of Entrance Halls in Batumi

To feel the atmosphere of the old city, it is worth walking through its historical districts. To date, i have managed to explore more than 30 entrance halls in Batumi. Among the places where preserved entrances can be found, the following are particularly interesting:

📍 Memed Abashidze Street, 27 — one of the most famous buildings with beautiful stained glass.
📍 Ahmed Melashvili, 27 — a house with elegant moldings and a mosaic floor.
📍 Parnavaz Mepe, 53 — a place where elements of classical Art Nouveau are preserved.
📍 Marjanishvili, 8 — one of the most atmospheric entrances with a high vaulted ceiling.
📍 Shota Rustaveli, 11 — a building with forged railings and stained glass.

These entrance halls are not just hallways, but true works of art that allow a glimpse into the past of Batumi.

How to Properly Enter Entrance Halls

Most entrance halls are in residential buildings, so it is important to behave respectfully and quietly. It is best to come during the day when the hallways are open and well-lit. If the door is locked, do not ring all the apartment bells insistently — sometimes it is enough to wait until one of the residents leaves or enters.

Pay attention to the condition of the entrance hall and do not touch anything with your hands, especially ancient decor elements. Remember that this is not a museum, but a part of a living city where people still reside.

Most of the beautiful entrance halls are closed. During our signature excursion, we show interiors that are impossible to see on your own.

Excursions to Batumi Entrance Halls

When i researched the architecture of Tbilisi, i discovered 134 ancient entrance halls. Then i decided to go to other cities in Georgia and continued my search in Batumi and Kutaisi. Finding closed entrance halls turned out to be more difficult, but thanks to local residents and archives, i managed to create a unique route.

In 2023, we conducted our first signature excursion of Batumi entrance halls, and it sparked great interest. Participants immersed themselves in the city's history, learned little-known facts, and saw Batumi from a new perspective.

The excursion is not just a walk, but a real journey through time, where the entrance halls become windows into the past. If you want to explore the architectural heritage of Batumi and get to know the city from an unusual angle, write to us and discover the city from a new perspective!
