Mzovreti Monastery — a hidden shrine in the Georgian mountains

Mzovreti Monastery — a Forgotten Shrine Among the Forests of Georgia

One of Georgia's hidden treasures, located in the Dzama Valley in the Shida Kartli region, about 70 km from Tbilisi. This ancient complex, surrounded by green hills and dense forests, creates a unique atmosphere of solitude and peace, attracting both tourists and pilgrims. The aerial photos i took back in 2023 perfectly capture the vibe of this amazing place, and now i am happy to share it with you.

You won't find this spot in standard guidebooks. There are no ticket offices, souvenir shops, or crowds here—only silence, forest, and stone that has preserved history for over a thousand years.

History of the Monastery

Mzovreti Monastery was founded in the early Middle Ages. The main church of the complex dates back to the 17th century, though archaeologists believe monastic life here began much earlier.

The name "Mzovreti" comes from the Georgian word "mze" — sun. It is believed the monastery got its name due to its location on an open, sunny slope. For centuries, it served as a spiritual center for the region where monks lived, copied books, and kept religious relics.

Today, the monastery is partially in ruins, which gives it a special atmosphere. The main church, fragments of walls, and the monastery courtyard remain. Stone walls are covered in moss, surrounded by old trees, creating a feeling that time has stopped.

Why This Place is Special

Mzovreti is more than just an architectural monument. It is a place of power. There is no noise and no tour buses. Such locations allow you to feel the real Georgia.
