Top 10 most unusual places in Georgia

Especially for you, according to Fahu Travel, here is a top list of unusual places in Georgia that will surprise even seasoned travelers.

Georgia has many amazing and unique spots that captivate with their history, landscapes, and extraordinary atmosphere. If you want to see this country from a completely new perspective, head to where tourists rarely go and where something special hides around every corner. Here is a list of unique corners of Georgia worth visiting.

Dartlo village in Tusheti

It looks as if it came straight off a movie screen. You can reach it via a breathtaking route or even by helicopter. Ancient towers, houses, customs, and mountain views create a special atmosphere.

If you want an unconventional journey, to visit a place without crowds of tourists, and to practically become a pioneer, then Tusheti is exactly the place in Georgia.

This high-mountain region is not easy to access; you need a professional guide who knows the terrain and traditions. We are prepared and happy to offer you an unforgettable journey.

Katskhi Pillar in Imereti

A massive stone pillar about the height of a 15-story building. Most surprisingly, a tiny church sits at the very top, where a monk lives.
When you stand nearby, it seems impossible to believe that one could even climb up there. However, there is a narrow iron ladder that he uses to ascend and descend.

Monks lived here centuries ago to be in total solitude, away from people and closer to God.
The pillar is located near Chiatura, in Imereti, and it is one of those places that is impossible to forget. It looks simultaneously strange, beautiful, and a bit surreal — as if it were intentionally placed in the middle of the valley.

Gomis Mta

Gomis Mta is a place where you can find yourself above the clouds. This small mountain settlement is located at an altitude of about 2000 meters, and most of the time, the houses, roads, and forests here are drowned in thick fog. Sometimes the clouds drop so low that it feels like you are standing on their surface.

People come here not for sightseeing, but for the sensations. For the silence, the clean mountain air, the incredible sunsets, and that feeling when time seems to slow down. It is especially beautiful in the morning and evening when the clouds are painted in soft pink and gold shades.

In the summer, we organize tours to Gomis Mta — with overnight stays, walks in the surroundings, and the opportunity to see this place at the most beautiful time of day. This trip is for those who want to see a different, quiet, and authentic Georgia.

Vardzia cave city

Vardzia is a huge cave city carved directly into the rock. When you look at it from the side, it is hard to believe that all this was created by humans. Inside, there are hundreds of rooms: living quarters, narrow tunnels, stairs, temples, and secret passages.

This city appeared in the XII century during the time of Queen Tamar and served not only as a monastery but also as a real fortress. Vardzia could shelter thousands of people, and thanks to a complex system of passages and hiding spots, it was almost invisible to enemies.

Today, walking through these stone corridors, you can literally feel the spirit of that time. Light enters through carved windows, views of the Kura valley open up, and you gradually begin to understand the scale of this place.

Abuli fortress

One of the most mysterious places in Georgia. It is located high in the mountains of Samtskhe-Javakheti, at an altitude of over 2000 meters, where there is only wind, grass, and endless expanses.

The fortress is built of huge stones, some of which weigh several tons. The most amazing thing is that there is almost no traditional mortar here; the stones are simply neatly fitted together. Because of this, it resembles ancient megalithic structures more than a classic Georgian fortress.

To this day, it is not known exactly who built it or when. Scientists believe this place could be several thousand years old. When you are inside, a strange sensation arises — as if you are standing in a place that saw a completely different, very ancient world.

Few people come here today, and that is precisely its special atmosphere. Abuli fortress is not just ruins, but a place where you can feel the true power of the mountains and touch a very deep history.

Vashlovani National Park

Here you can find the mud volcanoes of Takhti-Tepe and Kulakupra, which look like you have landed on another planet. Thick, cold mud slowly emerges from small craters, bubbles, and spreads over the slopes, creating a completely surreal landscape.

Around you are dry hills, cracks in the ground, and almost a total lack of trees. Silence, space, and a feeling that civilization was left very far behind. This is exactly why people come here — to see a different, wild, and unusual Georgia.

This is an excellent destination for those who love unusual places and real adventures. We have shared more details about this region and how to get there in our article on the website.

Lomisi monastery

Lomisi monastery is located high in the mountains, on the crest of a ridge above the Aragvi gorge. To get here, you need to climb on foot along a mountain trail, and the path itself makes this place special.
The monastery is small and very ancient, surrounded only by mountains, wind, and silence. Many legends are associated with this place. The most famous is about an ancient chain kept inside. It is believed that if you touch it and make a wish, it can bring luck and protection.

People come here not only for history but for the atmosphere. It is a place with very strong energy and incredible views, where you feel far away from the familiar world.

Once a year, this quiet place completely changes. Lomisoba takes place here — a large traditional holiday when thousands of people from all over Georgia climb the mountain. People walk for several hours to bow to the shrine, give thanks, and ask for what is most important.

In 2026, Lomisoba will take place on June 3. On this day, the ridge fills with people, the ringing of bells, and a special atmosphere that cannot be compared to anything else. This is one of the strongest and most authentic holidays in the mountains of Georgia.

Mount of the Nine Crosses

Crosses are installed on its summit, and for many years, pilgrims and locals have been climbing up here. It is believed that this place is connected to ancient beliefs and holds a special spiritual power.

The climb to the mountain takes about an hour and passes through forest and open slopes. At the top, a stunning view of the Racha region opens up — mountain ridges, thick forests, and small villages below. It is almost always quiet here, creating a feeling that time has stopped.

Many stories and traditions are associated with this place. People come here to make a wish, think about important things, or just be alone with the mountains.

As part of our signature tour of Imereti and Racha, we climb the Mount of the Nine Crosses. This is one of the most memorable moments of the journey and an opportunity to see Racha from a height that ordinary tourists rarely reach.

Murad's cave

One of the rarest and most difficult-to-access places i have managed to find in Georgia. This is not a tourist cave; there are no signs, roads, or accidental visitors here. Inside is a real underground world: huge halls, stalactites, stalagmites, and absolute silence.

When you first step inside, it feels as if you have entered another reality. Stone forms have been created here for thousands of years, drop by drop, and everything around looks like a natural museum hidden deep underground.

I searched for this cave for almost two years. Eventually, local residents agreed to show the exact location only for 600 lari, and it was one of those moments when you realize it was all worth it.

Today, Murad's cave remains little-known and almost untouched. It is a place for those who truly want to discover the real, hidden Georgia that is not written about in guidebooks.

Dead city of Mutso

One of the most mysterious places in the mountains of Khevsureti. An ancient settlement built on steep slopes, it seems to merge with the rock. Stone towers, narrow passages, and houses that have stood here for centuries create a feeling that time in this place has stopped.

Mutso was once a living and well-fortified village whose residents protected their lands and traditions. But over time, people left it, and for many years it remained empty. Today, walking among the ancient towers and stone walls, you feel a special atmosphere — silence, power, and a deep connection with the past.

Mutso is unlike any other place in Georgia. It is not just beautiful — it evokes emotions. It is a place that you don't just see, but experience.

Every year we go on a signature tour of Khevsureti, where we visit Mutso and other hard-to-reach places in this region. This is a journey into real mountains, to ancient towers, passes, and stories that have been preserved here through the centuries. All details and the tour program are available at the link.
These places are just the tip of the iceberg! Georgia is full of many more amazing places that beckon with both their beauty and mysterious atmosphere. After all, Georgia is not just wine and khachapuri.
